Canva is the design tool most small businesses already use for social posts, flyers, presentations and ads, often on the free plan. The question is when to pay, and how much. The answer depends mostly on one thing: how many people need to design. Canva Pro is a one-person plan. As soon as a second person needs their own login in a shared workspace, you are on Canva Business, priced per person.

All prices below are Canva's US dollar list prices, as shown on its pricing page for the United States when we last checked. Canva says prices depend on your location, and tax is added on top.

Canva pricing at a glance

Plan Billed yearly Billed monthly Who it is for
Free $0 $0 Anyone, one person
Pro $144 a year ($12 a month) $18 a month One person
Business $250 a year per person $25 a month per person One person or a small team
Enterprise Quoted by sales Quoted by sales Larger organizations

Canva's pricing page says yearly billing saves "from 16%". That is the Business saving: $300 over twelve months against $250 a year. On Pro the gap is wider. Twelve months at $18 is $216, so the $144 yearly plan saves $72, a third of the monthly cost.

Canva Free: what you get for $0

The free plan is a real working tool, not a trial. It includes:

  • More than 1.6 million templates and 4.7 million elements (photos, graphics, fonts, videos and audio).
  • The editor with more than 1,000 design types, from Instagram posts to business cards.
  • One Brand Kit, limited to three colors.
  • Limited access to Canva's Standard and Premium AI tools.
  • 5 GB of cloud storage and unlimited folders.
  • Ads made with AI, creative insights, and access to Affinity, Canva's professional design app.

What to watch:

  • The template and stock library is less than half of Pro's, and premium elements are marked with a watermark until you pay.
  • One Brand Kit with three colors is tight once you have a logo palette, a secondary palette and a campaign color.
  • No social media scheduling on Free.

Choose it if one person makes a few graphics a week and can live with the free templates. Many small businesses never need more.

Canva Pro: $144 a year for one person

Canva Pro costs $144 a year on yearly billing, or $18 a month if you pay monthly. Canva describes it as the plan for solo creators. Over Free it adds:

  • More than 3.6 million templates and 141 million elements: the full premium library.
  • Premium AI tools in the editor, with ten times the AI allowance of Free.
  • Five Brand Kits, components and on-brand AI.
  • Social media scheduling and the Social Content Planner, on top of the AI ad tools.
  • Affinity with AI.
  • 100 GB of cloud storage.

What to watch:

  • Pro is for one person. Canva's pricing FAQ is direct about it: only one person can use a Canva Pro account. Sharing one login across a team is not what you are paying for.
  • The AI allowance is a monthly budget shared across Standard, Premium and Ultra AI tools; heavy AI users can buy more through an add-on called AI Pass, at extra cost. Canva doesn't list the AI Pass price on its main pricing page, so check it in your account before you count on it.

Choose it if you are the one person who designs for the business: an owner, a freelancer or a solo marketer. At $12 a month on yearly billing it is one of the cheapest paid tools a small marketing budget will carry.

Canva Business: $250 a year per person

Canva Business is the plan for anyone who needs a team. It costs $250 a year per person on yearly billing, or $25 per person a month on monthly billing. Canva's comparison page puts the yearly price at about $20.83 a month per person. It includes everything in Pro, plus:

  • 100 Brand Kits, components and approval workflows, so a manager can sign off designs before they go out.
  • Twenty times the AI allowance of Free, twice Pro's, with AI Pass and AI top-ups available.
  • Collaboration and team admin tools: invite members, assign roles, transfer ownership of designs and see reports.
  • Flourish, Canva's data visualization tool, on its Presenter plan, alongside Affinity with AI.
  • A 10% discount on print orders, where Canva Print is offered.
  • 500 GB of cloud storage, which Canva's comparison article gives as a per-person figure.

Canva also says Business is "designed for individuals and small teams", so a one-person business can buy it to get the larger AI allowance or the 100 Brand Kits. Most solo users won't need those; Pro covers the design work for $106 a year less.

What to watch:

  • Every person pays the full price. There is no smaller team rate. Three people cost three times $250.
  • Canva Teams is gone for new customers. The older Teams plan is no longer available for new sign-ups or upgrades. If your business already has Teams, Canva says you keep your current price, including when you add members, but you won't get the features that are exclusive to Business. Cancel it and you can't come back to it.
  • Mobile subscriptions are solo. Canva says subscriptions bought through the App Store or Google Play are for individual use and don't include Business team features. Buy Business on the web if you want a team.

Choose it if two or more people design for the business, or you need approvals before anything is published.

How Canva Business billing works when people join or leave

Canva calls Business billing "pay-as-you-grow": you pay for the people on your team, and the bill adjusts as the team changes. There are two billing models, and the Help Center explains how to tell which one you are on: in Settings, then People, a Manage seats button means you are billed by seats; no button means you are billed by team members.

Billed by team members. Your bill is based on who is on your team on your billing date. On monthly billing, you can add or remove people at any time and the next bill reflects the change. On yearly billing, you still pay for a year, but Canva bills every three months, and new members are charged for the remaining part of the plan year.

Billed by seats. A seat is a paid place for one person. The rules are stricter:

  • Seats are billed in the next billing cycle even if the invitation hasn't been accepted.
  • If you invite someone and there is no empty seat, a new paid seat may be added.
  • Removing a person or canceling an invite doesn't remove the seat. An empty seat can still be billed until you reduce the seat count.

On both models, people who join within three days before your billing date are charged on the following bill, and Canva sends an email or in-app reminder to review the team three days before each bill.

What this means in practice: before you remove a freelancer or a departing employee, also check the seat count, or you may keep paying for a seat nobody uses.

What a small marketing team pays

Because Business is priced per person, the cost grows in a straight line with the team:

People on Canva Business Billed yearly Billed monthly, over 12 months
1 $250 $300
2 $500 $600
3 $750 $900
5 $1,250 $1,500
10 $2,500 $3,000

What a Canva Business team pays in a year, by team size

  • Billed yearly
  • Billed monthly
Canva Business at its US list price before tax: $250 per person on yearly billing, and $25 per person × 12 months on monthly billing, multiplied by the number of people on the team.
Show the numbers
Billed yearlyBilled monthly
1 person$250$300
2 people$500$600
3 people$750$900
5 people$1,250$1,500
10 people$2,500$3,000

Example: a three-person marketing team. An owner, a marketing coordinator and a part-time social media freelancer each need their own login and the shared Brand Kit. On Canva Business billed yearly, that is 3 × $250 = $750 a year before tax. On monthly billing it is 3 × $25 = $75 a month, or $900 over a year. Monthly billing costs $150 more a year but lets you drop the freelancer's place when the contract ends.

Example: one designer, the rest of the team just needs the files. If only one person really designs and the others only need the finished graphics, one Pro plan at $144 a year may be enough: the designer exports the files and sends them on. The limit is that Pro has no shared team workspace. The moment a second person needs the premium library, the shared Brand Kits or approvals, you are on Business pricing.

Canva Enterprise

Enterprise is sold through Canva's sales team; the pricing page shows "Let's talk" instead of a price. It adds 1,000 Brand Kits, organization-wide brand controls, single sign-on and SCIM provisioning, audit logs and 1 TB of cloud storage. Some features carry minimums: Canva Shield's AI output indemnity and IP indemnity content controls need at least 100 seats, and premium support, a dedicated customer success manager and creative services are for customers with 150 or more contracted seats. Few small businesses will need it.

Discounts: nonprofits and schools

  • Nonprofits: Canva says eligible nonprofits can get a free subscription with the premium features of Canva Pro plus team and collaboration tools, for one team of up to 50 users. Additional seats on Canva Enterprise are 50% off. You apply through Canva's nonprofit program.
  • Education: Canva Education is free for K-12 teachers, their students and qualifying schools and districts.

If you run a nonprofit, apply before you pay for Business: the free program covers most of what a small team needs.

Free trials

Canva offers free trials of both Pro and Business. Canva's own comparison of its plans describes the Business trial as 30 days, and its pricing FAQ says that if you invite team members to Canva Business, you aren't billed at all during the trial. Three conditions to know:

  • The trial is available once per Canva account and once per payment method.
  • During a trial, your AI allowance is the same size as on Free. The larger Pro or Business allowance starts when the trial converts to a paid plan.
  • The plan renews automatically when the trial ends if you entered payment details. If you started a trial without payment details, Canva says it ends automatically and you won't be charged.

How Canva compares with Adobe Express

Adobe Express is the closest alternative for quick social graphics, flyers and short videos. On Adobe's US pricing page:

Canva Adobe Express
Free plan Yes, 5 GB storage Yes, 5 GB storage
One person, paid Pro: $144 a year or $18 a month Premium: $9.99 a month, billed monthly
Next tier Business: $250 a year per person Firefly Pro: $19.99 a month

Adobe's US pricing page no longer lists a team plan for Express, so a team compares Canva Business with one Premium subscription per person. For one person, Express Premium at $9.99 a month comes to $119.88 over a year, $24.12 less than Canva Pro's $144 yearly plan and well under Pro's $18 monthly price.

What you give up is mostly Canva's library and habits: more templates, more of your team already knowing the editor, and features such as approvals and Flourish on Business. If cost per person is the deciding factor, put Adobe Express on the shortlist, but check how Adobe licenses several people before you buy.

Where Canva fits in a small marketing stack

Canva makes the graphics; you still need tools to send and publish them. Canva Pro and Business include basic social scheduling, but if you post to several accounts every day, compare it with a dedicated scheduler: see our Buffer pricing, Hootsuite pricing and Sprout Social pricing guides. For newsletters, an email tool such as Kit takes the images you design; our Kit pricing guide shows what it costs at each list size. If your designs end up on your own site, our website builder guide prices the main builders plan by plan.

Is Canva worth paying for?

For one person, yes, if Canva is part of your weekly routine: $144 a year for Pro buys the full template library, Brand Kits for your colors and logos, the premium AI tools and social scheduling. Start on Free, and upgrade when you keep reaching for premium templates or need more than one Brand Kit.

For a team, do the arithmetic before you sign up. Canva Business at $250 a year per person is easy to justify for two or three people who design every week, and it is the only current Canva plan with a shared team workspace. For a larger team of occasional designers, check whether everyone really needs a paid place, apply for the nonprofit program if you qualify, and price Adobe Express Teams as the cheaper alternative.
